When Should Parents Start Disciplining Their Kids?
Every parent needs to carry out a very important duty – to discipline their child. Disciplining our child means teaching them the ability to choose between right and wrong, which has a big impact on how they will make decisions as adults. Still, the big question lingers: when should we start disciplining our child?Generally, child discipline best starts when the child is between twelve and eighteen months old. Although starting child discipline depends on the child’s developmental stage, kids this age can already connect their behavior with consequences. It was found out that kids below one year old are too young to do this, and so disciplining them will not do any good.Once your child is old enough to be disciplined, it is important on the parents’ part to start it right. Since your child doesn’t have enough vocabulary to understand a long explanation yet, a firm “no” and a strong hand gesture should do the trick. Giving long explanations on why they shouldn’t do something will make them bored, and so you’ll lose their attention quickly.Remembering that toddlers have started to come to terms with their independence would also aid parents in disciplining their kids. Do not get surprised when you tell your child not to touch the vase yet he keeps on doing so. When things such as this happen, it would be best to either remove your child from the situation or move the vase somewhere he can’t reach it.Do not ever give in to your child’s wants, especially when he throws a tantrum. Often, a child resort to throwing a tantrum when they can’t get their way. Seeing your child cry may crush your heart or the noise may hurt your ears but giving in to your child’s wants will not do any good. There is only one way on how we should handle tantrums, and that is to ignore the behavior. Let your child cry to his heart’s content – it will do more good than harm. Not giving in to your child’s demands will make him realize who needs to be followed, which is a good way of establishing a parent-child relationship. To find out more about behavioral problems in toddlers we suggest visiting this website about parental help.
