I am a mother and let me add some tips to avoid addiction. One great way is to let your kids know God even when they're still young. Being spiritually active will make them more responsible. As the proverb goes, ” Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” I am sure when they are teens you would not have a problem.
Shoot all the drug dealer on your street? LOL
I think a lot of this depends on how the child was brought up by their parents. Like it or not parents have an immense role in how a teen will behave. It all starts when that teen was a child and how they were treated.
Always be there with your kids to remind them that drugs are no good.
I think child safety is really important and the only way to deal with it is to educate them. Give them the facts and be honest with them, rather than fill their heads with propaganda. If you tell them something is extremely bad and they should never do it, then no doubt they'll most likely start doing it. If you are honest and tell them the good and bad points, they will then weigh the pro's and cons and make their own decision. There is no way to stop them experimenting, if they want alcohol or drugs they will obtain it eventually, the only way to get to them is by letting them decide for themselves if they should make the decision or not.
My kid was once an addict. Thank God with constant guidance and some time in rehab he is on the mend.
